What Causes Gauge Problems?

Faulty automotive gauges can get you and your vehicle into big trouble. Whether it’s a bad speedometer that causes you that heft speeding ticket or a haywire fuel gauge that leaves you stranded on the side of the road, you want to replace faulty gauges at the first sign of trouble.

But first, it’s good to learn a few things that cause gauge trouble in the first place.

Usually, bad gauges are the result of one of the following things:

  • a defective voltage limiter
  • a poor ground at the sending unit
  • a break in the dash wiring
  • a bad fuel gauge sensor.

Of course, the problem with your gauge can also be caused by a problem with the part it’s reading. For example, a bad fuel gauge can be the result of a faulty floater. If multiple gauges are giving you trouble, check your battery and wiring connection.

Speedometers, on the other hand, often produce a faulty read when bigger tires are installed, but the speedometer is not recalibrated. If the diameter of your new tires is larger than the factory tires, the speedometer will read slower than your true traveling speed—thus, an accidental speeding ticket. Inaccurate readings can also occur in older vehicles if an improper speedometer gear has been installed. This would usually occur after a transmission replacement, but most good transmission shops will make sure that the correct speedometer gear is in the new transmission.

Upgrading Your Vehicle’s Gauges for a New Look

Gauges play a vital role in keeping your engine in check. They're also what you stare at every time you drive your car. If you’re sick of the same old gauges and want to give your old dash a new look, there are many aftermarket gauge options for you to choose from.

When replacing your vehicle’s gauges, you can choose new gauge face kits or replace individual gauges. If you’re someone who simply wants to spruce up an old cab, a gauge face kit is the easiest way to go. Gauge face kits include everything you need in a streamlined unit and fit directly over your factory originals.

Or, if you’re more into performance, choosing your gauges individually is a great option. Autometer, for example, has a huge selection of individual gauges, from fuel gauges to voltmeters and more. These gauges come in a variety of styles, from classic hotrod to modern LED-lit designs, mount virtually anywhere, and instantly transform your vehicle’s looks while giving you a superior read.
