Comparison of Jeep Truck and SUV Options and Models

With the Wrangler, Cherokee, Wagoneer and Comanche and later the Commander and Liberty, Jeep set a high bar for other 4 wheel drive manufacturers to reach. Over the years Jeep has made many changes to its lineup of 4x4s. Keeping track of the available options for each year can be quite a feat, so we’ve worked up a summary of the main changes to help you decide which year and model would work out best for you.

In 1991 Jeep added the Briarwood Sport Utility 4 door to its Cherokee 4 Wheel Drive 6 Cyl SUV and did not offer the 2 door version of the 6 cyl Cherokee.

In 1992 The Islander and Sahara were only offer with a 6-Cyl engine instead of the 4 cyl engine of the previous year.
The Cherokee  4 Wheel Drive with a 4 cyl engine added two new options, Larado and Sport.
The Grand Wagoneer was not offered in 1992.
The Comanche Long Bed pickup added two new options, Eliminator (Sport) and Pioneer. 1992 was also the last year that the Comanche Pickup was offered by Jeep.

In 1993 the Wrangler Islander was not offered.
The Cherokee 4 Wheel drive 6 cylinder was offered as
  • Sport Utility 2 Door
  • Sport Utility 4 door
  • Sport 2 Door
  • Sport 4 door
  • Country Sport 2 Door
  • Country Sport 4 Door with the following options
    • 2 Wheel Drive
    • 4-cyl 2.5 liter engine
Also in 1993 the Grand Cherokee 4 wheel drive was introduced.
Grand Cherokee 4WD 6 cyl
  • Sport Utility 2 Door

  • Laredo Sport Utility 4 Door with the following options
    • 2 Wheel Drive
    • V8 5.2 liter engine
Grand Cherokee 4WD 8 Cyl
  • Wagoneer Sport Utility 4 Door

    • 6 cyl 4.0 liter
In 1994 the SE Sport Utility 2 door was added to the Wrangler 4 WD 6cyl, and the Cherokee 4 WD 6cyl lines. The Cherokee 4 WD 6 cyl and the Grand Cherokee 4WD 6 cyl also added a SE Sport 4 door to the line. The Grand Cherokee 4 WD V8 stopped offering the Wagoneer. The Wrangler 4WD 6cyl dropped the Sport Utility 2 Door.
The following options were added to the Wrongler 4 WD S Sport Utility
  • w/o Rear Seat
  • Hard Top
In 1995 The Wrangler 4 WD 4 cyl S Sport Utility added the "Rio Grande Package" to it's list of options.
The Wrangler 4 WD 6 cyl dropped the Renegade Sport Utility and added the SE Sport Utility 2 door. The Wrangler 6 cyl also added the following options to the Sahara Sport Utility.
  • w/o Rear Seat
  • Hard Top
The Cherokee 4 WD 6 cyl replaced the Sport Utility versions with SE Sport utility versions (the sport was still offered). Only the Country sport 2 door was no longer offered.
The Grand Cherokee V8 Limited Sport Utility was replaced by the Limited/Orvis 4 door with the following options
  • 2 Wheel Drive
  • 6-cyl 4.0 liter engine

In 1996 the Wrangler was not offered, but it was picked back up in 1997. The Grand Cherokee also did not come in the SE Sport Utility 4 door from this year on.

In 1997 The Wrangler 4 and 6 cyl vehicles were once again offered with the same lines and options as in 1995 with the exception of the 4 cyl SE Sport Utility not offering the "Rio Grande Package"

The Grand Cherokee 6 cyl also came in a TSi Sport Utility with the following Options

  • 2 Wheel Drive
  • V8 5.2 liter engine
In 1998 the Cherokee 6 cylinder added the "Classic Sport Utility 4 door" and replaced the Country Sport Utility with the Limited Sport Utility with the same options.
The Grand Cherokee 6 cyl added a "Special Edition" to the line.
The Grand Cherokee 8 cyl removed the "Orvis" from its Limited Sport Utility and added a 5.9 Limited Sport with the following options.
  • 2 Wheel Drive
  • 6-Cyl 4.0 Liter engine

In 1999 the Grand Cherokee 6 cyl dropped the "Special Edition" and "TSi" Sport Utility vehicles and the Grand Cherokee V8 dropped the "5.9 Limited Sport Util"

Jeep was pretty quite in the years 2000 and 2001 with no real changes in their lines.

In 2002 Wrangler 6 cyl was also offered as an X Sport Utility.
The Jeep Liberty was indroduce in 2002 with the following configurations and options
Jeep Liberty 4Wheel Drive V6
  • Sport Utility 4 Door
  • Limited Utility 4 Door
  • Renegade Utility 4 Door with the following options
    • 2 Wheel Drive
    • 4-cyl 2.4 Liter engine
The Grand Cherokee 6 cyl was available in a Sport Utility 4 Door with the following options
  • 2 Wheel Drive
  • V8 4.7 Liter Engine
The Grand Cherokee with a V8 became available in the "Overland Sport Utility" with the following options
  • 2 Wheel Drive
  • 6-cyl 4.0 Liter engine
In 2003 the Jeep Wrangler added the "Rubicon Sport Utility" with an optional hard top.
The Grand Cherokee stopped offering the Sport Utility 4 Door and added the following options to the Laredo
  • 2 Wheel Drive
  • V8 4.7 Liter engine

In 2004 the "Unlimited Utility LWB" was added to the Wrangler 6 cyl

In 2005 the Wrangler 6 cyl also came in a "Rubicon LWB Utility 2 Door" and a "United Rubicon LWB" with optional hard top.
A "4 cyl Turbo Diesel" was added to the V6 Liberty Renegade options
And the V8 Grand Cherokee limited sport added a V8 5.7 liter HEMI to its options.

In 2006 The Commander 4 Wheel Drive was added with a V6 Engine which came as the following
  • Sport Utility 4 Door
  • Limited Sport Utility 4 Door with the following options
    • 2 Wheel Drive
    • V8 4.7 Liter
    • V8 5.7 Liter HEMI
The Grand Cherokee 4 Wheel Drive V8 HEMI came as the Following
  • SRT-8 Sport Utility 4 Door
  • Overland Sport Utility 4 Door with the option of 2 wheel drive
