The current Ford line up of trucks include the economical Ford Ranger, and the full sized F-Series trucks, the F-150, F-250, F-350, and F-450. Ford also sold the now discontinued Ford Courier between 1972 and 1982.
The Ford Courier was Fords answer to the newly popular Toyota and Datsun (later Nissan) pickups and was introduced in 1972. Small, light, good gas mileage but never quite as popular as the Toyota and Datsun. While discontinued in the United States (in 1982), the Courier continued to be sold in Asia, Australia and New Zealand
The Ford Ranger
is a midsized, economical truck that comes in both 2-wheel drive and 4x4 versions. Older Ranger 4 wheel drives used manual locking hubs while the newest versions feature Shift-on-the-Fly 4 wheel drive. This is the lowest price Ford truck that is currently available. The ranger comes in both Regular and SuperCab in XL, XLT, Sport and FX4 Off-Road. It is said that the Ranger will be discontinued after 2009.
From 1987 to 2004 the Ford Ranger was the best-selling Compact pickup in the United States.
Ford first introduced the Ranger in 1983 with a focus on fuel economy. At first the Ranger’s bed was smaller than the optimal four foot + between the wheel wells (necessary for hauling plywood). Later models grew larger, included an “Extended-Cab” option and larger engines.
The Ford F-150 One of the best in its class for towing capacity with the 09 rated at 11,300 lb. The F-150 comes in XL, STX, XLT, FX4, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum. The F-150 is the most popular of the Ford F-Series trucks, which were the United States best selling vehicle for 23 consecutive years at over 23,000,000 sold according to WikiPedia
Super Duty Ford F-250, F-350, and F-450 Trucks
The Super Duty line of Ford trucks are larger and heavier built and were designed for commercial and industrial use. While it may look similar to the F-150, that is where the similarities end. The "Super Duty" line of trucks do not share any of the design or build characteristics expected in the F-150 trucks.
Light Duty F-250, F-250HD (or Heavy Duty), and F-350
These were a lighter duty truck built previous to 1999. From 1999 on, the F-250 and F-350 were made from a separate platform from the previous generations and the F-150.
