Lexus a luxury vehicle division of Toyota, first started selling cars in 1989 with the LS sedan. This launch was preceded by years of research by Toyota to ensure that the Lexus was able to compete with the best of the American Luxury vehicles already in production. In 1985 the first of the LS400 running prototypes were built and tested first on the Autobahn in Germany in May of 1986 and then in September of 1986 extensive testing began on American roads. It wasn’t until May of 1987 that Lexus management finally approved the design of the LS400.

The LS400 earned the distinction of being named a “Car and Driver” 10 best in January of 1990 quickly followed by the Motoring Press Association “Best Imported Car of the Year” in February of 1990 and a ranking of the #1 Carline by J.D. Power and Associates in July of 1990.

The first SC 400 was sold in May of 1991 followed by the introduction of the SC 300 in August of 1991, which replaced the ES 250 in September of the same year.

Lexus entered the world of "Luxury Performance" vehicles with the GS 300 Lexus luxury performance sedan in January of 1993.

The October 1997 introduction of the GS line dramatically increased the power offered in the Lexus line with the V8-powered GS400 and adding the V8 engine to the LS400.

The Lexus IS 300 was launched in June of 2000 followed by a October 2000 launch of the LS430.

In March of 2001 the Lexus SC400 convertible was launched and in August of 2001 Lexus launched the IS300 5-speed and the SportCross.

Dubbing their new model as “Ruggedly Luxurious”, Lexus launched the GX 470 in November of 2002 and in March of 2003 the Lexus RX330 was offered.

The worlds first luxury hybrid was introduced in April 2005 as the Lexus RX 400h. And what Lexus describes as the “worlds first hybrid performance sedan” the GS 450h, which shares the same design as the GS430.

Another hybrid first was introduced in June of 2007, the LS 600h L, the worlds first hybrid V8 all-wheel vehicle sporting a “Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle” (SULEV) rating.

Lexus introduced the IS F with its 416 hp 5.0 liter V8 engine in February of 2008.

Marking the 20th anniversary of the debut of the first Lexus vehicles in 1989, Lexus introduced the 2010 HS 250h at the North American International Auto Show in January of 2009. The HS 250h is the 4th hybrid vehicle offered by Lexus and the first Lexus to utilize carbon-neutral Ecological Plastic materials helping the HS 250h to be 85% recyclable.
