The Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was manufactured by Toyota starting with the 1995 model year. The layout of the Tacoma is a frontal engine with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. It has two body styles, the two door regular cab and the four-door crew cab. When the Tacoma was first made it was the Toyota Hilux’s 6th generation model. The Tacoma was named after that city of Tacoma that is in Washington State.
The first generation of the Tacoma was made from 1995 to 2004. It had three different engine possibilities. It had a 2.4 liter in-line four, a 2.7 liter in-line four, or a 3.4 liter V6 engine, which could be in a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual. One downside to the first generation was that it only had the possibility of having a single cab or a slightly longer cab.
The second generation of the Tacoma started in 2004 and is still being made today. The second generation only had two engine types, the 2.7-liter straight 4, and the 4-liter V6 engine. Although the second generation only had two engines you could have the choice of four different transmissions, you hade the choice of a four or five speed automatic or a five or six speed manual. One thing that was added in 2001 was the new crew cab model.
The safety features of this truck are very good. It now has a new type of rolling sensor that makes it so that if the truck rolls, then side airbags will deploy. It comes standard anti-lock brakes, front airbags and also side airbags. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tested the Tacoma and decided that it should have an overall rating of five, which is the highest on their scale.
In 1996 Toyota added a new optional package to their new type of truck, the TRD package or Toyota Racing Development. The TRD package came with off-road tires, special TRD dampeners, a locking rear differential, and the TRD graphics. The Tacoma did not get its chance to use the TRD until 2005. The TRD is only useable on the 2005 to 2009 models. If the installation of the TRD occurs in a Toyota dealer it gets a 5-year, 60,000-mile warranty to it, while if it is not in a Toyota dealership it will only have a 10,000-mile, one-year warranty.
